Up to now safety science is trapped in the management concept that \u2018what gets measured gets done\u2019, and the belief that incidents rates are validly and reliably measuring safety performance. Leadership in the organization is then reliant on the upward messaging of this information. But what if the messages are inaccurate or even being hidden? The Coefficient of Chronic Unease is a tool that allows organizations to evaluate the cultural forces implicated in fatal risk and alert leadership to the exposure to fatal risks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The process of assessment uses a web-based survey that is completed by a selected but shifting group of senior managers on a quarterly basis. Participants are presented with seven variables in turn, for which they must select one of three options that best describes the situation as they see it in their company. The three options are each descriptive of approaches (\u201csystems\u201d) to risk management that will either increase or decrease the probability of a fatal event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Each quarter the coefficient is calculated with a proprietary algorithm developed by Safemap. A quarterly report is provided by Safemap where the fatal risk exposure is presented as either increasing (emerging, escalating or extensive) or decreasing, (receding, diminishing or retained.) This is presented to the leadership team with a virtual workshop. Subscription also includes advice and access to the Safemap toolbox of interventions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
