Background to SAFEsupervisor

The key person in the organisation is the supervisor. Without the skills to manage his/her subordinates, the supervisor can be a significant threat to the organisation. The supervisor’s skills are focused on the managing the safety climate, programs and decisions. This training program is about the most fundamental skills a supervisor must have:

1. Knowledge of human risk-taking behaviour
2. Ensure risk awareness of his/her team
3. Conducting a risk audit of a workplace
4. Managing workplace risks

Training Design

1. The program is a 1 day training course
2. A maximum of 12 participants can be accommodated, due to the intensity of the program
3. It is facilitated by a SAFEmap International consultant.
4. It requires attendees to complete a pre-course questionnaire of him/herself, and members of their teams to complete short questionnaires.

Training Objectives

At the end of the program participants will be able to:

Human risk-taking knowledge	Supervision skills	Risk Assessment skills
Identify risk taking behaviour State risk perception biases Promote safety through team processes Motivate safe work	Coach safety on-the-job State safety objectives Evaluate safety performance	Perform critical steps in auditing Assess conditions and practices Assess the Safety Organisation and Systems Profile and score an audit Give feedback of assessment outcomes Investigate/analyse incidents

The course is a dynamic and interactive process. It uses case studies of disasters (Piper Alpha, Moura and Challenger) to develop understanding of Organisational Risk.

This course requires a two-day development process, with a SAFEmap International consultant visiting the site to develop audio-visual materials for the course exercises.
